The Dartmouth Steam Railway
The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway is a full gauge preserved steam railway that takes in a fantastic stretch of South Devon coastline - It’s also a great way to spend an unforgettable day out with the family. The line terminates in Kingswear where there is a glorious ferry crossing over to Dartmouth - a picturesque town, renowned for its excellent shopping and illustrious maritime history. Dartmouth is delightful and very relaxed, both John Burton-Race and Mitch Tonks run their own restaurants by the water’s edge, so there is no problem finding somewhere special for lunch.
Dartmoor National Park
Head in completely the opposite direction and within forty five minutes you can be standing on Dartmoor - one of the last remaining genuine wildernesses in Britain. With its huge expanses of open moorland, moody skies, and infamous time stalked granite tors, the South West’s biggest National Park is spectacular, as are the walks. Around its edges are a number of interesting towns, historical villages and National Trust properties. Chagford, Tavistock and Ashburton are just several of the highlights. If you have time, spend a few hours exploring Castle Drogo - one of the greatest works of Sir Edwin Lutyens and the last castle to be built in England.
Exeter – A Capital City
Dating back to 1050 and built entirely of local stone, Exeter Cathedral stands proudly at the centre of Devon’s capital city. Built in a similar style to Salisbury Cathedral, it boasts an eventful past. Restored by Charles II but damaged in the English Civil War, it was then heavily bombed during the Blitz. Surrounded on all sides by well maintained lawns, the stunning architecture, both inside and outside really shouldn’t be missed. Summer days can be spent leisurely relaxing on the grass with a picnic whilst the newly enhanced Princesshay shopping precinct (and Exeter’s myriad of other shops) is less than a couple of minutes walk away. Big name stores, stylish restaurants and many smaller boutiques make Exeter an excellent choice for shoppers.
